Board of Education Home

The Board of Education is made up of nine unsalaried citizens elected to serve a five-year term. The board’s powers and duties are derived from the New York State Constitution, the laws of New York State, and the rulings of the New York State Commissioner of Education. The Board of Education’s main areas of responsibility are:

  • Establish district policies.
  • Develop an annual budget for public approval.
  • Vote on the Superintendent’s recommendations on personnel matters and contracts.
  • Review courses of study and textbooks.
  • Act as a communication link between residents and the Superintendent.

No person or group of persons acts in the name of the board. All motions require a majority vote before the Board can act. A board member is in an official capacity only during an official Board meeting. The Board employs a Superintendent who is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the district and administration of Board policies. The Superintendent develops policies, programs and plans for Board action.

Board of Education meetings are held in the District Office located at 102 Loralee Drive, Albany, New York 12205. The regular meetings will be held on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. each month unless otherwise noted.

Please note that meeting dates are subject to change. You may look at the web calendar for updates. Occasionally, a meeting may need to be rescheduled due to inclement weather. Exceptions may also be made to avoid conflicts with religious holy days, state and national conferences, or school recess periods.

Public Participation at Board Meetings

Board of Education meetings are open to the public and press. The Board welcomes public input but meetings are intended for education policy and program matters, not broad political or social issues.

The Board encourages public comment on District programs and initiatives, but discussion of specific individuals or students is prohibited. Public comments are acknowledged, but the Board does not engage in debate or dialogue during the comment period.

How to Participate

  • Anyone wishing to speak must submit a Request to Address the Board form (2370-E) to the District Clerk before the meeting begins.

  • Comments can be on agenda or non-agenda items.

  • Each speaker is limited to 5 minutes, and a maximum of 15 minutes per topic may be allowed.

  • Comments should be addressed to the Board President, who may limit speaking time to ensure efficient conduct of the meeting.
