South Colonie Students Celebrate Lunar New Year

South Colonie’s elementary schools recently rang in the Lunar New Year with vibrant student-led parades throughout their buildings. Hallways came alive with colorful dragons, lanterns and festive banners as students and teachers proudly led processions for their classmates and staff.
In the weeks leading up to the celebration, students and staff worked together to create thoughtful displays highlighting the customs, traditions and cultural significance of Lunar New Year festivities celebrated across Asia and around the world.
The event also holds special significance for English as a New Language (ENL) students, who have the opportunity to share their heritage and traditions with their peers. At Veeder Elementary School, families are invited to join the celebration, walking alongside their children in the parade and sharing in the excitement of the day.

“This celebration gives our students and their families a chance to see their cultures recognized and valued in a very visible way at our school,” said Veeder ENL teacher Vanessa Mauriello. “It creates a sense of pride and belonging for them, while also giving all of our students the opportunity to learn about and appreciate traditions from around the world. It’s truly a celebration of community.”
This meaningful annual tradition, shared across all five elementary schools, showcases student learning while bringing the entire school community together for a joyful cultural celebration.
