CCHS Science Teacher Dives into Ocean Research Workshop

South Colonie teachers know that great teaching starts with being great learners. Over the summer, Colonie Central High School science teacher Stacey Sebert continued her education, and met with fellow teachers and scientists at the EARTH 2025 Workshop in Newport, Oregon.
The workshop brings together educators and researchers for a week of collaboration, fieldwork, and curriculum development. It’s co-hosted by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and Oregon State University and highlights how research vessels, ocean observatories, and other emerging technologies can help us understand the ocean.
While she was at the conference, Sebert was even able to track ocean wave data after a 8.8 magintude earthquake hit Russia on July 30. The earthquake created tsunami waves across the Pacific Ocean, which traveled all the way to the United States.
“Luckily, it was during low tide, so the swells were small,” said Sebert.
Sebert also had the opportunity to present to fellow scientists at the workshop, showcasing how teachers are not just sharing science in the classroom, but actively contributing to scientific conversations.
