South Colonie to recognize Mental Health Awareness Week with districtwide activities

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, schools across the district will dedicate the week of May 12–16, 2025, to promote student well-being through a variety of schoolwide events and activities designed to foster mindfulness, connection, and emotional support.
Throughout the week, students will have the opportunity to engage in activities including mindfulness exercises, social-emotional learning sessions, art-based reflections, peer shoutouts, and more. Each day will also feature a themed dress-up opportunity to help raise awareness and encourage a sense of community among faculty, staff, and students:
- Monday – wear green to promote mental health acceptance
- Tuesday – wear your specified grade level color
- Wednesday – wear Wolf Pack gear
- Thursday – wear white or neon colors
- Friday – wear a positive affirmation t-shirt, or the color yellow
"Over the past decade, we have seen a significant rise in mental health challenges among children and adolescents," said Dr. Jennifer Judge, school psychologist at Colonie Central High School. "This increase has been influenced by a variety of factors, including the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, increased academic and social pressures, and excessive use of social media." By promoting emotional wellbeing, providing education, and creating a culture of acceptance, schools can play a pivotal role in shaping students' mental health.
South Colonie continues to prioritize student mental health through proactive initiatives, including the expansion of its Second Step curriculum, hosting youth mental health specialist speakers , and increased collaboration across mental health teams districtwide.
“Supporting the mental wellness of students is essential to academic success, and long-term well-being,” added Dr. Judge. “When students feel emotionally safe and supported, they are more likely to engage meaningfully in their learning and their relationships. Mental Health Awareness Week is one way we can highlight the importance of that support.”
