Governor Hochul Outlines FY 2027 Executive Budget as South Colonie Begins Planning for 2026–27

Governor Kathy Hochul has released her proposed FY 2027 State Budget, which includes several education initiatives affecting school districts across New York. Under the proposal, South Colonie expects a modest increase in Foundation Aid, though final amounts will not be known until the state budget is adopted in April. This additional funding is expected to help offset rising costs such as health insurance, staff salaries, and required pension contributions.
The Governor’s budget also includes statewide priorities such as expanded Universal Pre-K funding, continued support for free school meals, a stronger focus on math instruction, and funding for library construction projects. For South Colonie, additional funding for the district’s expanded UPK program would help create a better balance between state-aided funding and general fund expenditures.
South Colonie has already begun planning for the 2026–27 school year. The first draft of the district’s budget will be presented on Tuesday, March 10, at Saddlewood Elementary. Budget planning remains focused on maintaining strong academic programs, preparing students with the skills they need after graduation, and continuing improvements to school facilities through the Next Generation Colonie project.
“While we are encouraged by the proposed increase in state aid, we are planning carefully and responsibly,” said Assistant Superintendent for Management Services and Strategic Planning Jacqlene McAllister. “Our goal is to manage rising costs while continuing to invest in student learning, safe facilities, and long-term success.”
Several factors will continue to shape the final budget, including possible reductions in federal funding, the 2% cap on the allowable growth factor that affects the local tax levy increase, and the second year of the phased-in impact from the Next Generation Colonie capital project. At the same time, the district must plan for higher costs related to health insurance, salaries, utilities, supplies, and pension contributions.
As planning continues, South Colonie remains committed to transparency and community engagement. The proposed budget also supports expanded student opportunities, investments in safety and transportation, and ongoing maintenance to protect district facilities. The district will continue to share updates and invite community input as work toward the 2026–27 school year moves forward.
