The 'Pin-PACK’ Project: Students help elevate South Colonie branding

Colonie Central High School’s Graphics Club is making its mark on the district’s rebranding journey in collaboration with the communications department. Students are designing a set of eight corresponding pins that reflect the core of South Colonie’s identity while exploring the creative potential of the district's newly reimagined logos. This initiative enables students to showcase their artistic talents while gaining valuable experience collaborating with a real-world client who provides clear expectations and guidelines.
The project began with a brainstorming session and critique, where students presented their ideas and received feedback to refine their designs. This step emphasized pushing creative boundaries just enough to explore new possibilities while maintaining brand integrity. “The collaboration represents a great opportunity for students to develop professional skills, such as meeting client needs, incorporating constructive feedback, and designing for a broader audience,” said CCHS graphics teacher Justin Defazzio.
Once the designs are finalized, the district will evaluate the pin packs and select a winning set to be produced. The winning pins will not only celebrate student creativity, but may also become a districtwide staple, further integrating the community and our students into the rebranding process. To add to the excitement, a limited run of the winning pack will be sold through "Wolfie’s Den," a pop-up shop run by both the graphics and business clubs at the high school.
This collaboration highlights South Colonie’s commitment to involving students in meaningful, hands-on projects that prepare them for future success. “With the potential to become an annual event, the pin challenge embodies the district’s goal of fostering creativity, collaboration and school pride,” add Defazzio. “Our goal was to give the kids a chance to get their work published, while also deepening their understanding of branding in the professional world in a way that is still personal to them.
