Lighting the Way for a Cause: Colonie ICARE Students Spark Holiday Cheer with Toys for Tots Event

The South Colonie Central School District is kicking off the season of giving with its annual partnership with Capital Region Toys for Tots, hosting a series of toy drives and community events to support children in need this holiday season.
As part of the districtwide Toys for Tots campaign, Colonie Central High School iCARE students will host a Holiday Lights event on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Colonie Central High School. The evening will feature festive displays, live entertainment, and community spirit—all in support of a meaningful cause. Admission is free with the donation of a new, unwrapped toy, and families are asked to enter through the Sand Creek entrance. In addition to toy donations, cash contributions will be accepted to benefit the Albany Housing Coalition, iCARE’s charity partner for the 2025–26 school year.
“Our ICARE students have poured a tremendous amount of time and heart into creating a truly special experience for our community,” said Tess McCarthy, CCHS associate principal. “From coordinating with local organizations to planning the lights, music, and activities, their dedication embodies the spirit of giving that defines this event. It’s a wonderful way for families to come together, celebrate the season, and make a real difference for children in need.”
In addition to live performances from iHeart Radio, CCHS Chamber singers are also scheduled to participate: West Albany Fire Department, Colonie Police Department, Midway Fire Department, Shaker Road Fire Department, Stanford Heights Fire Department, New York State Troopers, Albany Airport Fire Department, South Colonie Transportation Department, Colonie Emergency Services, and more.
“We’re excited to welcome the community back for one of Colonie’s favorite traditions,” said Ceyda Cetin, CCHS’s ICARE representative. “It’s always incredible to see the lights, the joy, and the generosity that this event brings.”
As part of the district’s on-going collective effort the South Colonie Transportation Department will also facilitate toy pick-ups at the following dates and locations:
- Monday, Dec. 1 – Lisha Kill, 9:30 a.m.
- Tuesday, Dec. 2 – Roessleville, 9:30 a.m.
- Wednesday, Dec. 3 – Shaker Road, 9:30 a.m.
- Thursday, Dec. 4 – Saddlewood, 9:30 a.m.
- Friday, Dec. 5 – Forest Park, 9:30 a.m.
- Monday, Dec. 8 – Veeder, 9:30 a.m.
- Tuesday, Dec. 9 – Sand Creek, 9:30 a.m.
The collection drives will provide South Colonie families with the opportunity to donate new, unwrapped toys for distribution to children in need. South Colonie families who are interested in participating should send their child to school with the toy or make arrangements to drop off the toy prior to the scheduled collection date.
“The Colonie community continues to show what it truly means to be part of the Wolf Pack,” shared CCHS Principal Bill Behrle. “Our students, staff, and families come together year after year to support causes that extend far beyond our school walls. The iCARE Holiday Lights event is a perfect example of how our collective effort and compassion can brighten the season for so many children and families in need.”
Community members may also drop off donations at the South Colonie District Office or the Village Recreation Center by Monday, Dec. 8.
