NYS Educational Learning Standards for Technology Education
The New York State Education Department has established learning standards for Technology Education denoting the skills and abilities each student should attain at various levels of his or her education – elementary, middle and high school levels.
South Colonie Technology Education Department Curriculum
High School Technology Education
A commencement-level course in Technology Education may be used as the third unit of credit in science or mathematics, but not both. Also, students may meet the learning standards in Technology either in a Technology Education course or through an integrated course combining Technology with mathematics and/or science.
Middle School Technology Education
The goal of the middle school Technology program is to present students with Technology experiences based on national, New York State and South Colonie Standards.
Elementary School Technology Education
South Colonie elementary school students are utilizing computer technology as a tool for learning. Increasingly, teachers are creating computer-based student learning projects. For example, a class of third grade students can write original stories using the computer for word processing and, later, combine the stories with audio and computer-generated graphics to create multi-media presentations.
The district, through its Technology Committee, has developed a long-range plan for the integration of new technologies into the instructional program. This standing committee regularly reviews the district’s progress in implementing new technologies and identifies the district’s technology needs.
Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI)
CAI has been an integral part of the elementary instructional program for more than 20 years. All students in grades 3-4 utilize computers to practice their mathematics, reading and language arts skills. Students work in individualized sessions, which are recorded by the computer. This information, which identifies subject-specific strengths and weaknesses, is then interpreted by teachers to prescribe future activities to help improve student performance. Teaching assistants knowledgeable in computer applications are present in the CAI labs to direct and assist students.
