English New Language Families Celebrate Soccer & Community at World Cup Night

South Colonie’s English as a New Language (ENL) students had an opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate a shared love of soccer at the annual World Cup Night at Colonie Central High School.
Each year, South Colonie’s ENL department organizes this evening event to bring families in the department together at a high school soccer game. Students and their families were able to cheer on the Colonie Boys Varsity soccer team as they took on Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake under the lights. They also got the chance to win soccer-themed prizes and play on the field at half time.

“Seeing our multilingual families cheering side by side, having fun, and celebrating their heritage under the stadium lights reminded us that sport is a universal language,” said event organizer Vanessa Mauriello Reynolds. “When we create spaces where every culture is honored, our school truly feels like home.”

While at the game, families also had a chance to learn about other ENL programs and events, such as the upcoming Mulicultural Festival on April 9, 2027.
