Lisha Kill 6th Grade Band Hits High Note at NYSSMA Majors

The hallways of Columbia High School were filled with more than the usual energy on Thursday, April 30, as the Lisha Kill 6th Grade Band took the stage at the NYSSMA Majors Festival.
The ensemble performed three prepared concert selections for a panel of New York State–certified adjudicators. Despite the pressure that comes with a live, formal evaluation, the students delivered a confident and polished performance.Their efforts earning them the highest possible honor: Gold with Distinction.
This recognition is given to ensembles that perform at an exceptional level across all areas, and it reflects both the group’s preparation and their ability to perform under pressure.
“Achieving a Gold with Distinction rating at NYSSMA Majors is an extraordinary accomplishment, especially for our 6th grade musicians,” said Lisha Kill Principal Jill Penn. “This recognition reflects not only their musical talent, but also their discipline, focus, and commitment to playing. We are incredibly proud of the Lisha Kill Band and grateful for the dedication of Mr. Hearn in guiding our students to perform at such a high level.”
The performance was the result of months of practice, extra rehearsals, and steady progress throughout the year.
“I hope these students will remember this experience for years to come,” said Band Director Mr. Hearn. “More importantly, I hope they’ve learned that great things can come from hard work and persistence.”
The Lisha Kill school community celebrates this accomplishment and the effort that made it possible.
