Gratitude for our South Colonie Maintenance Department After a Long Winter

This past winter, our South Colonie Maintenance Department demonstrated extraordinary dedication to keeping our schools safe and accessible through snow, ice, and more! Over the course of 16 weeks, the team was called into action time and again—spending 11 days plowing, 17 days salting, and working through six full weekends.
Their efforts went far beyond regular responsibilities, with the department contributing more than 45 extra hours to snow removal alone. In addition, several team members logged an extra 35 hours dedicated specifically to salting operations (*):

- Dan Crowley

- Terry Engelhardt
- Jim Gooshaw

- Alan Schwank
- Drew Sickles
- Kevin Sroczynski
- Matt Ward
- Joe Willey
From November 17 through March 6, these individuals consistently stepped up, often working in the early morning hours or late into the night. Their commitment required long shifts and, at times, meant being away from their homes and families to ensure that students, staff, and visitors could safely access school facilities.
The department operates under the leadership and oversight of Gordan Webster and Dan Grizzel, who also respond to winter weather with the team members. The data and insights behind these efforts were carefully compiled by Samantha Moore, our district’s Facilities Use Coordinator and Buildings & Grounds Administrative Assistant, who wanted to make sure to highlight the scope of the team’s contributions.
The dedication shown by our Maintenance Department is a testament to their professionalism and care for the school community. Their hard work often happens behind the scenes, but its impact is felt by everyone who walks through our doors!
