Colonie’s Summer Meal Program Provides Over 3,000 Meals

The South Colonie Central School District is proud to celebrate the success of its 2025 Summer Meal Program, which provided free, nutritious meals to children throughout the community.
Hosted at Sand Creek Middle School from July 7 through August 21, 2025, the program served:
- 1,239 breakfasts
- 1,772 lunches
That’s a total of 3,011 healthy meals enjoyed by students this summer.
Open to all children 18 and under—with no registration or identification required—the program ensured that families could rely on consistent, high-quality meals during the summer months.
“Summer can be a hungry time for children who rely on school meals during the year,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Perry. “This program ensures that all kids in our community have access to healthy, nourishing food while school is out. We’re proud to be able to offer this support to families in our community.”
The Summer Meal Program is part of the USDA-funded Summer Food Service Program, which guarantees that all meals meet federal nutrition standards, offering fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein, and milk.
“Our team worked hard this summer to make sure children in our community had reliable, healthy meals,” said Food Service Director Annette Sukup. In addition to serving students attending summer programs at Sand Creek, we were proud to open the site to members of the wider community. Their dedication is what makes this program such a success.”
Building on this momentum, the South Colonie Food Service Department has continued to expand and enhance its offerings for students year-round. Since last year, the department has introduced halal food options and locally sourced produce, reflecting the district’s commitment to inclusivity and fresh, healthy meals. Staff have also engaged in additional training to strengthen their skills and ensure the highest quality service.
Together, these efforts highlight the district’s ongoing commitment to wellness and nutrition, ensuring that every student has access to meals that are both nourishing and welcoming to all.
