Colonie Central High School has been named a School of Excellence by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, Inc. (NYSPHSAA) for the 2024-25 school year, a recognition that celebrates the exceptional academic achievements of student-athletes across the state.

To receive this honor, at least 75% of a school's varsity teams must qualify for and earn the Scholar-Athlete Team Award, an achievement that reflects the strong academic performance of team members during their sports seasons. Colonie's commitment to both academic and athletic success earned the school a place among 221 schools statewide recognized with this distinction.

"These prestigious honors represent the culmination of a school year marked by outstanding achievement in the classroom," said Dr. Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director. “These accolades would not be possible without the dedication, hard work, and commitment of the student-athletes, coaches, and administrators whose efforts these awards proudly recognize.”

The School of Excellence Award, introduced in 2016–17, complements NYSPHSAA’s long-standing Scholar-Athlete Team Award program, which began in the 1991–92 school year. The award program is designed to highlight and celebrate schools that prioritize academic success alongside athletic performance. This year, 110 schools received the higher-level School of Distinction Award, given to schools whose varsity teams achieve a 100% Scholar-Athlete Team Award rate.

Colonie Central High School will receive a commemorative award at the local athletic director workshop this fall.

“Earning the School of Excellence designation highlights the commitment our student-athletes show both academically and athletically,” said Colonie Central High School Principal William Behrle. “It represents the well-rounded achievement and pride we strive for in every student who walks our halls.”
