Colonie Central High School’s Mary Poppins Wins Top Honors at 2025 High School Musical Theatre Award

The magic of Mary Poppins soared to new heights this weekend as Colonie Central High School was awarded Best Musical at the ninth annual High School Musical Theatre Awards, hosted by the Collaborative School of the Arts at Proctors in Schenectady.
This prestigious recognition marks a milestone for Colonie’s performing arts program and celebrates the talent, dedication, and creativity of its student cast and crew.
"This is an unforgettable moment for our school and our students," said Colonie drama club director Susan Vatalaro."To be recognized among such incredible talent is a reflection of the hard work, passion, and heart our students brought to this production every single day."
The ceremony, held on May 10 at Proctors MainStage, showcased productions from more than 20 schools across the Capital Region. Only nine schools earned nominations that secured them a featured performance slot—and Colonie was one of them. Students took the stage to present a musical highlight from Mary Poppins before a packed audience of peers, educators, and theatre professionals. In addition to the performance honor, Colonie’s production was awarded Best Musical, capping off an unforgettable night of celebration and recognition.
This win marks the second time Colonie has received the award for Outstanding Musical. They won last year as well for their production of The Wizard of Oz. Colonie has been nominated for best musical four years running, which means that the students have the privilege of performing on the Proctors stage, in front of an audience of over two thousand spectators. They also get to meet and work with the talented staff of The Collaborative School of the Arts and students from all over the capital district, making connections and building memories that will last a lifetime.
“We’re so proud of our students, and this award belongs to every member of the cast, crew, and production team,” said Vatalaro. “Their passion and collaboration truly brought this story to life.”
The South Colonie Central School District congratulates everyone involved in Mary Poppins and looks forward to future success in the arts.
