For the twelfth time, the South Colonie Central School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. Now in its 26th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

“There are over 18,000 school districts in the United States, and 935 of them received the designation this year.  That’s about 5%” said Peter Cannistraci, Music Department Chairperson.  “South Colonie is proud to be part of that 5%!”

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, South Colonie answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified by school officials and reviewed by the leading arts educational research firm, WolfBrown. 

 “Music education is a huge part of the South Colonie curriculum,” explained Cannistraci.  “In South Colonie, all students in kindergarten through grade seven take music classes.  Band, orchestra and chorus start in grade five and continue through high school.  We have over 1500 students enrolled in band, chorus, or orchestra.  This year, we have three graduating seniors who have been accepted into college music programs.”

For 12 years running, they have earned the Best Communities for Music Education designation — and no team is more deserving. Their dedication, talent, and impact on our students speak volumes. They continue to set the standard for excellence in music education.”
