NYS Educational Learning Standards for Foreign Language

The New York State Education Department has established learning standards for Foreign Language denoting the skills and abilities each student should attain at various levels of his or her education – elementary, middle and high school levels.

Middle School Foreign Language

The South Colonie Foreign Language Program begins in seventh grade. Students will learn to communicate using the three basic skills: listening, reading and writing. Lessons are delivered using song, dance, movement, pictures and stories. Students will also develop their language skills through the use of technology and the computer lab at each middle school. Students will have access to software programs, such as Rosetta Stone and The Learnables. Topics will include geography, numbers, colors, alphabet, food, body, clothing and animals.

High School Foreign Language

The South Colonie Foreign Language Department prepares students for the 21st century with communication skills to enter a diverse and global world community. We believe the study of a second language will enrich our students’ lives with increased confidence and greater self-awareness. Learning a new language allows students to connect with other cultures and discover new worlds. Students will develop the proficiency skills necessary to communicate with others to gain knowledge and exchange information with people from other countries.
