South Colonie A Contract
ForExcellence School District
South Colonie is one of 39 school districts across New York State
required to develop a Contract For Excellence under the No Child Left
Behind Act.
While the majority of our students have demonstrated great success on
yearly state exams known as “assessments” in a
variety of subject areas, a small subgroup of Students with
Disabilities at Colonie Central High School has not made Adequate
Yearly Progress on one exam — the English Language Arts
Regents. This has occurred three out of four school years from 2003-04
to 2006-07 (the last test figures released by the NYS Education
Department).
As a result of this one subgroup’s performance, Colonie
Central High School has been identified as a School Requiring Academic
Progress (SRAP) – Year 3. The district’s seven
other schools are all designated as Schools in Good Standing.
Under the Contract For Excellence, the district has received new state
Foundation Aid and submitted a Comprehensive Education Plan outlining
to the State Education Department specific instructional improvements
that are being made to help this subgroup achieve with its peers on the
ELA assessments.
Some of these improvements include:
- Reducing class sizes and providing more one-on-one ELA
instruction in a Regents Lab environment
- Hiring an additional English teacher to work specifically
with our Students with Disabilities to improve learning and achievement
on subsequent Regents tests
- Introducing a new computer-based, web tutorial to bolster
ELA instruction and retention.
South Colonie Schools are working hard to adjust to the rapidly
changing state and federal learning standards. The district takes its
Contract For Excellence very seriously and will do what is necessary to
help all students become successful in school and in life.

For Excellence contact the Office of the Assistant Superintendent For
Instruction at 869-3576.
