Colonie School Buses Earn High Grades on NYS DOT Safety
Inspections
Posted july 18, 2011
The South Colonie Transportation Department has earned a high rating on a recent New York State Department of Transportation school bus safety inspection report for the 2010-2011 school year.
Of the 164 district school transportation vehicles inspected by NYSDOT in June, 96.3 percent passed. All school buses are subject to a comprehensive inspection by NYSDOT at least every six months. Vehicles that do not pass are placed out of service until the problems are corrected. Six South Colonie buses received this designation and are being repaired.
NYSDOT performs semi-annual vehicle safety inspections on a wide variety of vehicles that are subject to inspections. Of approximately 154,000 inspections conducted each year, almost 80 percent are performed on vehicles used in school transportation service, either directly by a public or private school or by a contractor hired to provide that service.
The remaining inspections are performed on vehicles used in other services regulated by NYSDOT: motor coach charter service, transit, ambulette (transit disabled) and "for hire" passenger service. According to NYSDOT, South Colonie had an inspection passing rate of 96.3 percent in the 2009-2010 school year and 92 percent in 2008-2009.
