CCHS Wins Suburban Council Sportsmanship Award for 2009-10 Year

Colonie Central High School has earned the Suburban Council Sportsmanship Award for  the 2009-10 school year. Each school in the 12-member league selected a coach, parent and student from each varsity sport to cast a sportsmanship ballot. All votes were tallied to determine a winner. A banner will be presented to the school. Individual team Sportsmanship Award honors went to the Colonie Central High School Boys Volleyball, Girls Track and Field and Girls Indoor Track.

Board of Education Honors CCHS Outstanding Athletes

The South Colonie Board of Education honored two outstanding athletes from Colonie Central High School at its meeting on June 1. Presented with President's Spotlight Awards were Kyle Plante and Lisa Anson.

Plante, a sophomore and member of the Girls’ Indoor & Outdoor Track & Field Team, was honored for the following accomplishments: a two-time NYS Champion in the 300 meter dash, a national Indoor 200 meter Champion, 9th Grade national record in 300 meter dash, 9th Grade NYS record in 55 meter dash, 10th Grade NYS record in Outdoor Pentathlon, two-time Dartmouth 55 hurdle Champion, two-time Yale Invitational 400 meter Champion, holds nearly 20 school records for indoor and outdoor track and ran a 54.1 in the 400 as part of the 4 X 400 meter relay team at Penn Relays.

Anson, a senior and member of the Varsity Wrestling Team, was honored for these accomplishments: 2010 Girls’ Wrestling USA All-American Team, more than 100 career varsity wins, four time Class A place finisher, two time Section II place finisher, first ever female large school Section II place finisher, four career varsity tournament titles and more  than 10 varsity tournament place finishes.

Two CCHS Students Earn 2010 Scholar Athlete Awards

Two Colonie Central High School students have earned 2010 Scholar Athlete Awards from the Sports Foundation of the Greater Capital Region. CCHS winners are Tyler Salamone and Rachel Scofield. Salamone has a GPA of 96.036 and played high school Golf, Basketball and Tennis. Scofield has a GPA of 94 and played Soccer, Basketball and Lacrosse. Scholar athletes, which come from throughout the Section II region of New York State and represent a wide variety of sports, are honored at the annual Scholar Athlete Awards Dinner. They were featured recently in a special Times Union newspaper supplement.

South Colonie Spring Scholar Athlete Teams Named

Six Colonie Central High School spring varsity interscholastic athletic teams earned Scholar Athlete Team Awards for achieving a team Grade Point Average of 90% or higher. Teams honored were Boys Baseball, Girls Softball, Boys Tennis, Girls and Boys Track and Field and Girls Lacrosse.

CCHS Sophomore Sets Schenectady Invitational Hurdles Record

South Colonie track and field sophomore Kyle Plante broke the girls meet record in the 400-meter hurdles at the Schenectady Invitational in April with a time of 62.50 - helping the Garnet Raiders win the team title. She finished 6.5 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. Colonie High last won the girls Schenectady Invitational in 2007.

South Colonie Winter Scholar Athletes

Five Colonie Central High School winter varsity interscholastic athletic teams earned Scholar Athlete Team Awards for achieving a team Grade Point Average of 90% or higher. Teams honored were  Girls Bowling, Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Indoor Track.

Colonie High Bowling Teams Finish Off Stellar Years

The Colonie Central High School boys and girls bowling teams finished off stellar years with trips to the state championships.

The Colonie girls team fended off a late charge by Section XI champion Middle Country to take first place at this year's New York State High School Championships in Poughkeepsie. The girls knocked down 1,006 pins in the first game and 976 pins in the second game on its way to posting a six-game total of 5,564 pins, 47 pins ahead of Middle Country. Stephanie Buckley took home high game honors at states with a total of 245 pins for Colonie, which won its first state title in five years.

Members of the girls team are Shawna Burk, Tiffany Cavin, Katelyn Steverson, Dominique Gabriel, Shannon Fiddes, Kalynn Carl, Sara Colino, Kirsten Kaminski, Megan Rzeszuto, Hannah Mochrie, Sarah Brooks, Stephanie Buckley and Lindsay Gravell.

The Colonie boys team placed second to Section I's North Rockland at states. Matt Olsen had the high series with 1,421 pins for the Garnet Raiders, who knocked down 6,213 pins as a team. Members of the boys team are John Shaw, Mike Voss, Keith Nieckarz, Tyler Degener, Scott Lawson, Matt Olson, Anthony LaValley and Tyler Mochrie.

South Colonie Fall Scholar Athletes

Seven Colonie Central High School fall varsity interscholastic athletic teams earned Scholar Athlete Team Awards for achieving a team Grade Point Average of 90% or higher. Teams honored were Football, Golf, Girls Tennis, Boys and Girls Cross Country and Boys and Girls Volleyball.

Colonie Central High School graduate, Tyler Moffatt, has been named the 2008 Male Athlete of the Year at Schenectady County Community College. A Criminal Justice major at SCCC and member of the CCHS Class of 2007, Moffatt was also named the Region III Baseball Player of the Year, an honor that is voted upon by baseball coaches from throughout the region. Moffatt, a third basemen with the SCCC Royals, finished second in the country and first in the region with an amazing .531 batting average and was also named to the First Team All-Region squad. He graduated in May 2009 and plans to attend the University of Bridgeport (Connecticut) in Fall 2009 on a baseball scholarship, majoring in Criminal Justice.
