Multicultural celebrationColonie Central High School Host Multicultural Celebration

Colonie Central High School held a Multicultural Celebration in May. This event lived up to its name in that it was truly a celebration of South Colonie's diverse student body. The celebration was organized by the Human Relations club, whose mission is both to educate and to celebrate. The district's philosophy is to educate students about different cultures so that they can better understand one another. South Colonie Food Services offered a special international menu at Colonie Central High School, Sand Creek and Lisha Kill middle schools to celebrate Foreign Language Week March 21-24. The menus featured foods from Spain, France, China and Italy.

Some Foreign Language Exams Eliminated This School Year Due to New York State Budget Cuts, State Education Department Reports

The New York State Education Department has confirmed it will eliminate administration of some Foreign Language exams this school year due to state budget cuts. This includes elimination of Grade 8 Second Language Proficiency Exams and elimination of high school Foreign Language Regents exams in all Foreign Language subjects except for Spanish, French and Italian. full story

Two Colonie Central High School students - Gabriela Zappi and Edwin Reyes - were selected to attend this year's Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute. full story

drum and dance photoAfrican Drum and Dance Group Performs at Sand Creek

Marafanyi Percussion offered presentations throughout the day this spring on African music and dance to the Sand Creek Middle School sixth grade Spanish and French classes. Students learned African dances, how to play African drums and several expressions in SouSou, one of the languages of Guinea, West Africa. All sixth graders attended a performance at the end of the day with Marafanyi, local drummer, Wayne White and master drummer, M’Bemba Bangoura from Guinea. Sand Creek’s PTA and the Capital Region BOCES funded the event. full story
