South Colonie Celebrates National Foreign Language Week
South Colonie students in grades 5-12 are once again expanded their borders and celebrated National Foreign Language Week March 1-5.
A variety of educational and cultural activities were planned by the Foreign Language Department to promote foreign language learning and cultural diversity. Even the Food Services Department joined hands in coordinating a special international menu (pdf).
Colonie Central High School and Sand Creek and Lisha Kill Middle Schools served a variety of ethnic foods, accompanied by music, representing a different country for each day of the week.
Monday was designated as Spanish Day featuring Chicken Fajitas, Fiesta Corn, Mexican Rice and Churros for dessert.
On the menu Tuesday, Chinese Day, was sweet n sour chicken, vegetable egg rolls and fortune cookies.
Wednesday was French Day, Thursday was German Day and the week concluded with Italian Day.
Students also designed colorful posters promoting a language and country of their choice and placed them on display. Throughout the week, the morning announcements featured Trivia questions in a variety of different languages for students to learn from. This year through the Rotary International Exchange Program, the high school is hosting a student from Germany, 11th grader, Lara Sueltemeyer, who shared her experiences. Colonie Central High School has been fortunate to previously host exchange students from countries such as France, Bolivia, and Poland.
