The South Colonie Central School District announced earlier this month a new ad hoc committee to support the reimagining and reopening of schools for the 2021-22 school year. The committee’s focus will be to ensure that the district is meeting the guidelines set forth by New York state while prioritizing the learning experience for all students.
The committee will review South Colonie’s current plan reopening plan and make recommendations to the Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools regarding changes for the 2021-22 school year.
“We know what has been working for us so far but will definitely be looking at expanding the capacity of our classrooms to allow more students to have an in-person learning experience,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Perry. “We will also be looking to our committee members to help us enhance the learning experience for students through the addition of extracurriculars and mental health supports while continuing to ensure a safe learning environment for our students and staff.”
The committee will be comprised of representatives from the South Colonie Board of Education, administrators, teachers, the district’s medical director among other key personnel. The district will also be actively recruiting parent and guardian participants to be involved in the committee work.
“We know that the voices of our parents and guardians are an important part of the successful return to in-person instruction for our students, faculty, and staff members,” said South Colonie Board of Education President Rose Gigliello. “As such, we have been having conversations around enhancing our recruitment strategy to invite more parents to the table. Our parents and guardians know more than anyone the impact of the pandemic on our students and it is certainly a priority for us to have them have a voice in the reimaging of schools as we look at our upcoming school year.”
Volunteer registration is now open
The district has now opened a volunteer form for parents interested in serving on the 2021-22 reopening committee as well as other district committees. Parents and guardians who are interested in serving on the reopening committee will be asked to complete the volunteer interest form by March 1, 2021. The committee is expected to begin meeting in early spring.
