Lisha Kill students expereince the JOIDES Resolution

On Tuesday, Feb. 4 students in Mrs. Bell’s 5th grade science classes at Lisha Kill Middle School had the opportunity to video chat with scientists aboard the JOIDES Resolution (JR).  The JR is a research vessel that drills into the ocean floor to collect and study core samples.  The ship is currently traveling in the South Pacific Ocean. Scientists use the core samples to learn more about our Earth’s history.  Students were able to tour the ship and see several of the integral areas of the ships, such as the derrick, moon pool, catwalk and the core labs.  After the tour, the students spoke with one of the micropaleontologist working on the ship. Students were able to ask a wealth of questions regarding life on the ship and how science works on the boat.
