April 2 update: BOE schedule change, remote learning and food service continue during spring recess

Dear South Colonie Families:

We sincerely appreciate your continued patience and support as we continue to work together through this ever-changing environment. Please see some brief updates below and know that we will continue to provide information to you as soon as it is available.

Board of Education meeting schedule changes

The South Colonie Board of Education Meeting and second draft budget presentation previously scheduled for Tuesday, April 7 has been moved to Tuesday, April 14 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held virtually.  Link to the live stream and meeting agenda will be forthcoming.

Remote learning and food services continue during spring break

As you are aware, Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order closing schools until at least April 15. During this extension, districts are expected to provide continuity of learning and food service to students and child care for its essential workers every weekday, including days originally part of the previously scheduled spring break.

Because the extended executive order encompasses the district’s upcoming Spring recess, the academic calendar has been adjusted so that staff members can continue to support students with remote learning opportunities and food distribution during this timeframe.

Food Service

South Colonie Food Service and Transportation Departments will continue to provide breakfast and lunch for students, free of charge, while schools are closed at the following locations:

  • Colonie Central High School, 9 to 11 a.m. Monday-Friday
  • Lisha Kill Middle School 9 to 11 a.m.  Monday-Friday

Lunch and the following day’s breakfast will be provided at the above pick-up location each weekday with the exception of Friday, April 10. Thursday, April 9 staff will double up on meal distribution providing two breakfasts and two lunches to cover both Thursday and Friday. Please note staff will not be on-site on Friday, April 10 to distribute meals.

Families are asked to open their trunks when they arrive so that staff can safely serve meals. Any family needing assistance with meal delivery should email: Annette Chamberlin at chamberlaina@scolonie.org.

Ways to help

Amid the ongoing COVID-19 public health crisis, South Colonie Central School District is continuing to support its community through the backpack and related programs. As a result, there is an immediate need for hygiene products such as: shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and other related items. If you are in a position where you could support this need, please reach out to Tom Kachadurian at kachaduriant@scolonie.org.

Thank you all for your continued patience, understanding and support.

Sincerely,

Dr. David Perry
Superintendent of Schools
