Welcome to the Mathematics Department. We hope that this site will help you better understand our programs and course selections. During this time of transition in curriculum and testing in New York State, we are continuing to strive for excellence in math for all students.
NYS Educational Learning Standards for Math
The New York State Education Department has established learning standards for math denoting the skills and abilities each student should attain at various levels of his or her education – elementary, middle and high school levels.
South Colonie Mathematics Department Curriculum
Elementary School Mathematics Education
Elementary children learn to understand mathematics and learn to become mathematically confident through instruction in mathematical reasoning, number and numeration, operations of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and by doing measurement.
We strive to make mathematics meaningful and relevant, which means we connect instruction to real-life applications. Many teachers pre- and post-test students’ mastery of math skills and concepts and develop lessons and activities to meet students’ individual needs.
Third and fourth grade students receive support through computer-assisted instruction. Classroom computers and a computer laboratory allow students to utilize computer technology to enhance their mathematical reasoning. Many math activities are integrate with the science curriculum. The mathematics curriculum and lessons are aligned with the New York State Learning Standards and the recommendations of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Middle School Mathematics Education
The goal of the Middle School Mathematics program is to present students with math experiences based on national, New York State and South Colonie Standards.
High School Mathematics Education
High school students must complete 3 units in the mathematics to complete the New York State’s requirements for earning a Regents or an Advanced Regents diploma.
