

The South
Colonie Special Education PTA or SEPTA is special PTA unit
chartered in 2009 to help parents advocate for children with
special needs. Special Education is free appropriate education in
the least restrictive environment for children who require
differentiated programs and/or special services beyond the normal
provided by the regular school program.
SEPTA is a unit organized for those interested in the issues of educating gifted and special needs children. The SEPTA unit meetings every other month, at 6:30 p.m., in the Colonie Central High School library (see meeting dates in right column).
We invited every parent, guardian, teacher, administrator, staff member of community member to join us and become a member of our unit. If you would like to become a member, please complete the SEPTA enrollment form and return it to your child's school in an envelope marked SEPTA membership or mail to:

Important SEPTA Meeting Monday May 14

South Colonie's next SEPTA meeting is Monday, May 14th, 6:30 p.m., at the Sand Creek Middle School library. The speaker will be Nancy Marmet from the Office of Pupil Services. Nancy will be speaking on the differences between and IEP and a 504 Plan. If you have any questions about these two programs, what they are, the difference between them, the process, etc. ... this is the meeting to attend. We will also be presenting the SEPTA board for next year. We hope to see you there.
Parent Guides Available From National PTA on Common Core Standards

The National PTA recently issued parent guides on the Common Core State Standards. The guides, created for grades K-12, include key items that children/teens should be learning in English Language Arts/English and Mathematics in each grade, once the standards are fully implemented. The guides include: Activities that parents can do at home to support their child’s/teen's learning and methods for helping parents build stronger relationships with their child’s teacher.
