The first grade classes create a silly picture that reviews and refreshes their learning from kindergarten. The students use freeform and geometric shapes to create their composition of people and an animals in the sun, after observing and analyzing abstract artist Joan Miro’s People and Dog in the Sun. Looking at abstract art helps the students to realize that we don’t always understand what we see when we look at art, and that it is OK for art to be strange and silly. Finally, the students review their knowledge of primary colors using markers to finish their works of art.
