Dangers of the Choking Game and Teens

The whole idea of this "game" is to cut off blood flow and oxygen to the brain and obtain a perceived "high" or lightheaded, dizzy feeling. Because it does not involve drugs or alcohol some teens feel it is safe, when in fact it is just as dangerous. Teens do it by themselves by wrapping a belt, towel or rope around their neck. They deprive the brain of oxygen and start to get the "high" feeling. There is a second sensation when the tied item is loosened around the neck allowing the blood to rush to the brain. They also do it in groups or at parties by hyperventilating, chest compression by others, hanging themselves and manual choking. Any of these activities are obviously dangerous and can cause more damage than intended.

The DANGERS in this include, depriving oxygen, for too long, causing cells to die and brain damage. There is also the possibility of the tied item not being released in time. This can cause serious injury and death. In cases where the individual is alone, there would be no one there to release the tied item if unconsciousness occurs.

Many teens die in their rooms, with parents home, in under 30 minutes. It can kill a child/teen the very first time it is tried. It only takes 3-5 minutes to cause brain damage or death. PLEASE TALK WITH YOUR CHILDREN AND WARN THEM OF THE DANGERS.
