Sand Creek Singers Perform at American Choral Director’s Summer Conference

Five Sand Creek Middle School students were selected to participate in the Elementary and Middle School Honor Choirs at this summer’s NY ACDA (American Choral Directors Association) conference.

Lizzie Mendrick and Aylina Woodard were accepted to participate in the Middle School Honor Choir, which included students in grades 7-9, August 9-12, at the downtown Albany Hilton. Isabella Nicotina, Cole Connell and Matthew Golding were accepted to participate in The Elementary School Children’s Honor Choir, which included students in grades 4-6.

Student selections were based on teacher recommendation and included singers from all over New York State.

Recommended singers must exhibit exceptional vocal and musical ability as well as leadership within their home school choral organizations. This is the first year that South Colonie students have participated.

The NY ACDA conference included workshops for music teachers from all over the state. Students in the honor choirs rehearsed for two days with a guest conductor, then performed for music teachers, family and friends.

The guest conductors this year were Philip Silvey (Middle School Honor Choir), from the Eastman School of Music, and Judy DeBose (Elementary Honor Choir), from The Frederick’s Children’s Chorus in Baltimore, Maryland.

Sand Creek students at this event are members of their choral program directed by Starr Norman. Mrs. Norman was also the piano accompanist for both choirs.
