SebertScience Teacher Attends Summer Institute on Climate Change

Sand Creek Middle School science teacher Stacey Sebert was only one of 22 educators in the eastern U.S. selected to attend the Maitland Simmons Scholarship professional development summer workshop entitled "Oceans, Organisms, and Climate."

The Institute was held at Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Education Center in New Jersey this July. Sebert received more than 40 hours of instruction and left the Institute with curricular tools specifically for her classroom, which will interest students about the impacts of climate change on the ocean and its organisms.

Some of the activities included collecting samples on Rutgers University research vessel from the salt marsh, estuary, and ocean; seining in the salt marsh; and conducting research at both the Research Center and Tuckerton Seaport. These hands-on and data-focused lessons, demonstrations, and field experiences support the Next Generation Science Standards as well as address Common Core Math and English/Language Arts Standards.
