Lisha Kill Team Legend Gets Unique Lesson About Revolutionary War Period
For two days in December, Team Legend students at Lisha Kill Middle School were engaged in a lifelike study of the Revolutionary War.
During their Social Studies classes with Mr. Obermayer, students experienced a presentation by Marilee Urbanczyk and Nathan Hoffman - American Revolution re-enactors. A library classroom was transformed into a Revolutionary War period home with the addition of antique furniture and artifacts from the period.
The presentation opened students' eyes to what life was like for a 12-year old person living in America during the Revolution period. Students learned Dame Schools (taught by women), clothing\attire, various crafts as an apprentice and the importance of learning how to sew. In addition, the soldier described living conditions for a soldier and demonstrated typical commands that were ordered to the troops.
The next day as part of their math instruction, students were challenged to figure out the length of time needed by General George Washington’s men to transport the Revolutionary War Army across the Delaware River in Durham boats. The capacity of the boats was determined and the actual river crossing time was calculated. Students could then figure out the number of hours needed to make the actual crossing. The Team watched the movie “The Crossing” and were naturally excited when Washington’s campaign was a success!
