Colonie and the Capital District: A Community Profile

Colonie Ranks as Safest Place in United States

Colonie, New York, has been ranked at the top of the list of the safest places to live in the United States, according to CQ Press' City Crime Rankings 2009-2010: Crime in Metropolitan America. The rankings include all cities of at least 75,000 residents that reported crime data to the FBI in the categories noted for calendar year 2008.

Colonie a Part of the Growing Tech Valley Region of the Capital District

Colonie is part of New York’s Tech Valley – a region that stretches from the Canadian border near Montreal to just north of New York City – is brimming with opportunity and excitement. Tech Valley offers rewarding career and business prospects, world-class educational and research facilities and a fantastic quality of life. It is also a member of the Albany Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce.

People from across the country and around the world are relocating to the region to take advantage of our growing career possibilities, educational opportunities and incredible quality of life. The region is promoted by the Tech Valley Chamber Coalition – a group of 24 chambers of commerce – though the TechValley.org. TechValley.org is a comprehensive, online tool for individuals, families and businesses that are interested in relocating to the region.

Living in Tech Valley

Live as you like to in Tech Valley. The region accommodates just about every lifestyle choice, from cities to suburbs to rural countryside. No matter where you decide to settle, you’ll enjoy a great quality of life and a low cost of living.

Housing prices are still well below what you’ll find in major metropolitan areas and the employment opportunities, health care, school systems and recreational activities are among the best in the country.

Tech Valley is also ideally situated in eastern New York state. Several major highways and three international airports (plus more than 30 smaller, regional airports) make travel convenient and easy. We’re also just a short drive to New York City, Boston and Montreal.

Working Here

Tech Valley offers abundant career opportunities in a great mix of industries, including high tech, health care and higher education. The economy here is robust and only getting stronger, making it an excellent place to work, do business and invest. And don't just take our word for it. Beacon Hill Institute, Entrepreneur, Expansion Management, Forbes, Inc. and the Milken Institute have all recently named Tech Valley as one of the best places for business.

Playing Here

We don’t "take a vacation" from our fun here in Tech Valley. Winter, spring, summer and autumn all offer plenty of indoor and outdoor activities for every age and interest.

When the winter snow falls, you can hit the slopes and trails for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and snowmobiling; take to the frozen lakes and ponds for ice skating and fishing; or, head indoors for college and professional basketball and hockey. Lake Placid and its world class ski trails are just a short drive away.

When the snow and ice melt, and the green of spring reappears, hunting, fishing, golfing or taking in a flower or home show become popular.

As spring gives way to summer, the mountains are ideal for hiking, the lakes for swimming and the parks for picnicking. Enjoy an outdoor concert or county fair. Stroll though a village or town for antiquing or just to soak in the culture. Visit historic Saratoga Springs and Saratoga Race Track, home of the Travers Stakes in August, or take a ride to Lake George and enjoy the nearby Adirondacks. Visit the National Baseball Hall of Fame in nearby Cooperstown.

When autumn arrives, the apples are ripe for picking, the fall foliage is perfect for viewing and stadiums are filled with enthusiastic college and high school football fans.

Of course, our numerous museums, art galleries and historic sites offer year-round exhibits, events and programs to satisfy history buffs, art lovers and cultural enthusiasts alike.
