Board of Education Honors CCHS Students, BOE Members For Achievement

The South Colonie Board of Education honored Colonie Central High School students with President Spotlight Awards at its June meeting. The awards were presented by Board President David Kiehle for various achievements during the 2016-17 school year. Board members were also honored for their Board Mastery.

Ryan Devanandan – National Merit Scholarship

Colonie Central High School senior Ryan Devanandan has been named a winner in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. The National Merit Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the program by taking the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test which serves as a initial screen of approximately 1.6 million entrants each year and by meeting program entry and participation requirements. The finalists are evaluated on their academic record, information about the school's curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, the high school official's written recommendation, information about the student's activities and leadership, and the finalist's own essay.

Jeremiah House – NYS Champion, Indoor Track & Field

Jeremiah is the NYS Indoor Track champion in the 55-meter hurdles. He won the State Qualifiers in a time of 7.73. At the Eddy Meet, Jeremiah won both the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles. He set new school records in both races and ranked as the No. 1 runner in New York State in the 110-meter hurdles. As a result of those efforts, Jeremiah was selected as the Eddy Meet’s Most Outstanding Athlete. Jeremiah was also named Times Union newspaper’s Winter Athlete of the Year.

Varsity Girls Bowling Team – Suburban Council, Section 2 & NYS Champions

The Colonie Girls Varsity Bowling Team, coached by Pete Grugan, finished the 2017 season as Suburban Council Champions, Section 2 Champions and NYSPHSAA Champions. This is the team’s third Section 2 Championship in the last four years. The team finished with a 15-1 League record and won both the Rotterdam and Poughkeepsie Invitationals. Team member Amanda Chrzanowski was named the Suburban Council Bowler of the Year. Team Members are Amanda Chrzanowski, Quinn Hodson, Shealynn Peckowitz, Dakota Deitz, Caitlyn Kelly, Natalya Porcello, Abbey Fruiterman, CarolAnne Manzer, and Katie Rivers.

Board Excellence Award – Level 2

Superintendent Jonathan Buhner recognized South Colonie Board of Education members Christine Badger Mele, Rose Gigliello, David Kiehle, and Ed Sim for earning the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) Board Excellence Award. The program is designed to recognize extensive time and effort for school board members who strive to continually expand their governance knowledge and skills. Members qualify for recognition by participating in NYSSBA developmental activities such as the Board Officers Academy, the annual convention, conferences, regional workshops, or district-level custom improvement programs totaling 150 points.

Board Mastery Award – Level 3

Superintendent Buhner also recognize South Colonie Board of Education members Brian Casey, Shelle Jaquish, and Neil Johanning for earning the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) Board Mastery Award. The program is designed to recognize extensive time and effort for school board members who strive to continually expand their governance knowledge and skills. Members qualify for recognition by participating in NYSSBA developmental activities such as the Board Officers Academy, the annual convention, conferences, regional workshops, or district-level custom improvement programs totaling 250 points.

Biomedical Design & Development

Michele Famoso and the students in the Biomedical Design and Development course Colonie Central High School reported to the school board on the status of their design projects for students with Cerebral Palsy attending the Langan School in Albany.
Presenting were Krista Betzweiser, Caitlyn Flood, Brittany Truax, Emily Benson, Jarrod Knapp, Ayanna Roberson, Adam Blanchard, Alayna Colbert and Brian Doran.

iCARE Presentation

Tom Kachadurian, Colonie Central High School Associate Principal/iCARE Coordinator, and the CCHS iCARE officers provided an overview of the year’s activities and fundraisers. They also presented a $6,000 check to two organizations from funds raised at the annual Raiderfest event to representatives of the Homeless & Travelers Aid Society (HATAS) and the Interfaith Partnerships for the Homeless. Student iCARE representatives were senior Abbie Pickett, ICARE President; junior Kimmy Murray, iCARE Vice President; senior Alayna Colbert, iCARE Secretary; and sophomore Brianna Fields, iCARE President in training.
