Suburban Council music festival

South Colonie Students Attend Suburban Council Music Festival

Twenty-seven South Colonie students joined nearly 350 of the Capital Region’s most talented young musicians for the 2016 Suburban Council High School Music Festival.

These students, in grades 8-12, were chosen by their music teacher’s recommendation and a selection process involving scores from last year’s NYSSMA solo competition. The event was hosted Jan. 15-16 at Scotia-Glenville High School.

Participating school districts included Averill Park, Ballston Spa, Bethlehem, Burnt-Hills Ballston Lake, East Greenbush, Guilderland, Mohonasen, Niskayuna, North Colonie, Saratoga Springs, Scotia-Glenville, Shenendehowa, and South Colonie.

The students underwent a series of intense music rehearsals, led by renowned conductors from across the Northeast. The High School Chorus was directed by Woodrow Bynum, choir director of the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys. The High School Band was directed by Bill Tiberio, from Fairport, NY. The High School Orchestra was led by David Bebe, Assistant Professor of Music at the College of St. Rose. Also performing was a middle school Jazz Band, led by Michael Benedict, a recently retired music educator from Greenville, NY. The festival culminated in a concert performance.

South Colonie students performing with the band were Heather Dilcher (trombone), Leah Sutherland (horn), and Rachel Kim (clarinet); Performing with the orchestra were Laura Avila (viola), Ryan Devanandan (violin), Janine Hvizdos (violin), Skylar Lai (violin), Jamie Lam (violin), Meixin Liang (violin), Valerie Marcil (cello), Laura Matthews (viola), Carolyn Miner (viola), Nisa Mohamed (violin), Lindsey Podlaski (cello), Lucas Richard (string bass), Angela Sano (viola), Nick Sterge (violin), Christina Tran (viola), Serena Unser (viola), and Destin Yee (violin). Performing with the chorus were Barry Betz (bass), Yeimy Corniel (alto), Katera Edwards (Alto), Hannah Fahy (soprano), Mickey O'Donnell (soprano), and Justin Miller (bass). Olivia Kirker (baritone saxophone) performed with the Jazz Band.
