Detention Center Students And Teachers Learn Lesson in Giving
Posted december 22, 2011
Capital District Juvenile Detention Facility houses junior high and high school aged students from all over New York State who are awaiting placement while attending court proceedings. Because this facility resides in the South Colonie School District, South Colonie teachers have been leading the academic program there for the past 14 years.
This year, in light of the economic difficulties people have been experiencing in our area, Special Education Teacher Rebecca Oppenneer and Teaching Assistant Roxanne Gillen and their English classes decided to carry out a meaningful lesson in Philanthropy.
Reading Teacher Dawn Napolitano
collected tooth brushes from the students in the CALC program.
Together, with items donated by the Oppenneer family, students
at the Capital District Juvenile Secure Detention Facility were
able to pack up generous gift bags containing personal
essentials and crafts that they had made for an area homeless
shelter.
