South Colonie students participated this week in the Hour of Code, a global initiative that encourages everyone to try coding (computer programming). This is the third year South Colonie students have participated in the annual event held during Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 7-11)

Last year, more than 100 million people world-wide people participated in the Hour of Code. This year, the Hour of Code hopes to reach 200 million!

Participation in the Hour of Code offers benefits to everyone. Whether you are five or 105 years old, those who try the Hour of Code learn to code while having fun. Computer Science is a rapidly expanding field. By 2020, it is anticipated there will be 1 million more computing jobs than there will be applicants to fill them. While 60 percent of math and science jobs are in computing, only 2 percent of college students are currently earning degrees in the field.

Three separate hour-long sessions were held at the high school, and approximately 100 students in grades 9-12 participated. The High School's STEM Club hosted two additional evening sessions for the district's elementary and middle school students and their families. Nearly 100 students in grades Pre-K through eight, and their families, attended.
