High School Offers DMV Learner's Permit Testing Online
Students do not need to travel to the Department of Motor Vehicles and wait in line to take their learner’s permit drivers test. Colonie Central High School offers permit testing online during the school day.
DMV implemented the Online Knowledge Testing Program in schools during the fall of 2007 in the hopes of making the testing process less time consuming for everyone. CCHS students ages 15 and older, who obtain written parental permission (for a permission form, click here (pdf) can report to the computer lab during their lunch period or study hall to take the learner’s permit exam. A CCHS staff member will serve as the test proctor — verifying credentials, forms and setting up accounts.
The system automatically scores each test and displays the results for the student on the computer screen. Students who pass the exam will then be given a printed receipt from the lab. The receipt can be taken to any New York State DMV office, where the test-take will receive his or her permit, provided they are age 16 or older.
After receiving a junior learning permit (DJ or MJ), students must complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 15 hours after sunset, to apply for a driver's license through DMV. A completed Certification of Supervised Driving form (pdf) must be presented to the Motor Vehicle License Examiner at the road test. The required supervised driving hours do not apply to 17-year-old permit holders who have completed a certified Driver Education course and who present a valid Student Certificate of Completion (MV-285) at the road test, since they will be issued a senior license (Class D or M) upon passage of the road test.
