Students Participate in Suburban Council Music Festival

Twenty-three Colonie Central High School students joined nearly 350 of the Capital Region’s most talented young musicians at Columbia High School on January 14, participating in the Suburban Council High School Music Festival.
These students, in grades 9-12, were chosen by their music teacher’s recommendation and a selection process involving scores from their last year’s NYSSMA solo competition.
Participating school districts included Averill Park, Ballston Spa, Bethlehem, Burnt-Hills Ballston Lake, East Greenbush, Guilderland, Mohonasen, Niskayuna, North Colonie, Saratoga Springs, Scotia-Glenville, Shenedehowa, and South Colonie.
The students underwent a series of intense music rehearsals, led by renowned conductors from across the Northeast. The High School Chorus was directed by John Fleishman, Jr., a vocal music educator from Orchard Park, New York. The High School Band was directed by Matthew Marsit, from the Hopkins Center for the Performing Arts at Dartmouth College. The High School Orchestra was led by William Mercer, a music educator from the West Genessee School District in Syracuse. Also performing was a middle school Jazz Band, led by Kevin Blancq, an accomplished jazz performer and educator from the LaGuardia High School of Music and Art. The festival culminated in a concert performance.
South Colonie students performing with the band were David Peer (trumpet), Mark Lupina (horn), Amelia Jones (trombone), Joe Bradt (tuba) and Peter Jones (percussion); Performing with the orchestra were Matthew Berloff (tuba), Katie McManus (violin), Julie Gigliello (violin), Dorothy Bellas (violin), Brendan Jeffers (viola), Abby Hutton (viola), Jackie O’Brien (viola), Erica Harrell (viola), Emily Finlan (cello), Samantha King (cello), and Tristen Jarvis (bass). Performing with the chorus were Bridget Boland (alto), Christina Fuller (soprano), Joan Harrison (alto), Katie Mead (soprano), Lauren Poole (alto), and Edwin Reyes (tenor). Performing with the Jazz Band was Heather Dilcher (trombone).
