Board of Education Honors Community Leaders and Veterans' Groups

The South Colonie Board of Education honored community leaders and veterans' groups with President Spotlight Awards at its June meeting.

The awards were presented by Board President David Kiehle and Vice President Ed Sim to these individuals for their efforts in helping South Colonie students, area veterans and their families, and the community at large. The following people and groups were honored:

Professor Peter Hanley and the Siena College Opera Club

The school board honored Professor Peter Haley, who has worked with the Opera Clubs at the Lisha Kill Middle School and the Colonie Central High School over the years to provide students with multiple opportunities to see opera and other live performances. The Siena Opera Club has paid for the tickets to the performances, funded the busses, and provided opportunities to view behind the scenes rehearsals. This fall they were able to get tickets to the toughest ticket on Broadway – “Hamilton.”

The Blue Star Mothers and Soldier On

South Colonie iCARE students dedicated the 2015-16 school year to uniting and educating the community at large about the heroism and sacrifices made by veterans and active men and women in serving in the armed forces. District-wide fundraising efforts and educational experiences have centered on bringing more awareness to two local agencies that provide support services to our aforementioned heroes; those organizations are Blue Star Mothers and Soldier On. Both organizations were honored and presented with checks for money raised this year at Raiderfest, the Rugged Raider Patriot Challenge and a variety of other efforts throughout our schools. Each group was presented a check from iCARE for $5,000.

Colonie Town Justice Norman Massry

Honored was Colonie Town Justice Norman Massry, a decorated U.S. Army Aviator, who served as the keynote speaker for the dedication of our Hill of Heroes on May 21 at the opening ceremonies of RaiderFest.
