Paul Gordon is honored by Board of EducationBoard of Education Honors Paul Gordon For 24 Years of Service to South Colonie

The South Colonie Board of Education honored Paul Gordon at its June 7th meeting for 24 years of service to the district as a school board member. Gordon is stepping down June 30 after a long and distinguished career. The friendly and outgoing Gordon will be remembered by his South Colonie colleagues and peers as a champion for children’s programs like music and the spelling bee, and for his years as a dedicated district educator in the classroom. full story

Board Honors Students For Academic, Athletic and Volunteer Achievement

The South Colonie Board of Education honored several student groups for academic, athletic and volunteer achievements during the 2010-11 school year at its June 7th meeting at Colonie Central High School. full story

Board of Education Honors District Lifesavers

Two district employees credited with saving lives this school year were honored by the South Colonie Board of Education with President Spotlight awards at its May 24 meeting. Honored with custodian Doug Hutton and bus driver Peter Murray. full story

Neil JohanningEdward SimSouth Colonie Voters Elect Neil Johanning and Edward Sim to Board of Education

South Colonie voters went to the polls May 17 and elected newcomer Edward Sim to his first term on the Board of Education and re-elected incumbent Neil Johanning to a new term. In a close vote, Sim defeated Daniel Waters, another newcomer running for the first time, 1,053-1,038. Johanning, who ran unopposed, received 1,734 votes. Sim will replace long-time board member Paul Gordon, who did not seek re-election after serving for 24 years. Both Sim and Johanning will begin new five-year terms on the nine-member school board on July 1. full story

Board of Education Adopts Proposed $91.1 Million District Budget For 2011-2012; Public Vote Held on May 17th

The Board of Education adopted a proposed $91.1 million district budget for the 2011-2012 school year on April 13. The budget, which went before voters on May 17, includes a spending increase of 1.99 percent over the current school year and an estimated school property tax increase of 2.93 percent for district residents. In preparing the budget, the district was faced with rising costs and a sharp decrease in state aid of more than $500,000.

After a full life of transporting hundreds of children to and from school, logging more than 140,000 miles of Colonie roads, most of us would be looking forward to a quiet retirement. But not old South Colonie School Bus No. 55 - no, sir! Instead, at age 11 (that’s 99 in human years) “Old Yellow” has been reincarnated for a second life as a Special Services Team - SST (aka SWAT team) vehicle for the Colonie Police Department. The South Colonie Board of Education got an opportunity to tour the newly-converted bus before its meeting on April 26 as it pulled outside the District Office building. full story

Six longtime South Colonie administrators have announced their retirements effective at the end of the 2010-2011 school year. The Board of Education approved these retirements at its meeting on February 15. full story

South Colonie Board of Education Honors Top Athletes From CCHS

The South Colonie Board of Education honored Colonie Central High School's outstanding athletes from the 2009-2010 school year at its meeting on October 5. Presented with President's Spotlight Awards were members of the Girls Varsity Bowling and Girls Varsity Softball teams. Also on hand was New York State Assemblyman Bob Reilly, who presented a proclamation from the State Assembly honoring Colonie High Girls Indoor/Outdoor Track star, Kyle Plante. full story

Board of Education Set New Tax Rate; Increase Lower Than Expected

School property taxes will increase by only about a third of the amount originally projected last spring for residential and commercial property owners living in the Town of Colonie. Based on equalization rates and final assessments recently set by area municipalities, the Board of Education met August 31 and set a new Colonie tax rate of $24.05 per $1,000 of assessed value for the 2010-11 school year. This represents a 1.25 percent or 30-cent increase over last school year’s Colonie tax rate of $23.75 per $1,000. Full story

Board of Education Honors CCHS Outstanding Athletes

The South Colonie Board of Education honored two outstanding athletes from Colonie Central High School at its meeting on June 1. Presented with President's Spotlight Awards were Kyle Plante and Lisa Anson.

Plante, a sophomore and member of the Girls’ Indoor & Outdoor Track & Field Team, was honored for the following accomplishments: a two-time NYS Champion in the 300 meter dash, a national Indoor 200 meter Champion, 9th Grade national record in 300 meter dash, 9th Grade NYS record in 55 meter dash, 10th Grade NYS record in Outdoor Pentathlon, two-time Dartmouth 55 hurdle Champion, two-time Yale Invitational 400 meter Champion, holds nearly 20 school records for indoor and outdoor track and ran a 54.1 in the 400 as part of the 4 X 400 meter relay team at Penn Relays.

Anson, a senior and member of the Varsity Wrestling Team, was honored for these accomplishments: 2010 Girls’ Wrestling USA All-American Team, more than 100 career varsity wins, four time Class A place finisher, two time Section II place finisher, first ever female large school Section II place finisher, four career varsity tournament titles and more  than 10 varsity tournament place finishes.

Casey Elected to Second Term on Board of Education

Incumbent Brian Casey has been elected to a second term on the South Colonie Board of Education. He ran unopposed on the May 18th election ballot and received 2,318 votes. The seat carries a new five-year term on the nine-member school board beginning July 1. For a bio on Casey, click here.

South Colonie Residents Approve 2010-11 District Budget 1,645-1,120

South Colonie Central School District residents went to the polls on Tuesday, May 18, and approved an $89.4 million budget for the 2010-11 school year by a vote of 1,645-1,120. The budget continues to support South Colonie’s key educational initiatives despite a projected $3.7 million cut in state aid to the district over the current school year. full story

Board of Education Begins 2010-2011 Budget Development Process

The South Colonie Board of Education has begun development of the 2010-11 district budget. A series of public workshops are being held throughout the winter and spring leading to the May 18th public vote.

The South Colonie Board of Education and President Brian Casey presented Stephen Benedict, Jr., Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, with a President's Spotlight certificate at its October 6th meeting. Benedict retired in the fall after working more than 37 years for the district. He was hired as a part time custodial worker in 1972, climbed up through the ranks and became B & G Superintendent in 2005.

Thirty-three of the district’s finest teachers, teaching assistants, counselors and librarians were honored by the South Colonie Board of Education this fall for their recent tenure appointments. A reception was held in September where Board President Brian Casey joined Superintendent Jonathan Buhner and other board members and administrators in presenting the honorees with certificates for this accomplishment. School board honors Tim Ryan photoRyan Honored for Years of Service as Board President

The South Colonie Board of Education honored James Tim Ryan (picture right in the photo) this fall for his years of service as the School Board President. Ryan served as Board President for seven years from 1998-2001 and from 2005-2009. Presenting the award is new Board President Brian Casey. Ryan was featured in the school board’s President’s Spotlight portion of the September 8th meeting.
