The South Colonie Board of Education has approved a plan (pdf) for next September to change the starting and ending times of some of its schools. The change, the result of an ongoing transportation study, is expected to save on overall transportation costs by lowering the number of daily bus runs and provide more time between runs for drivers to transport students to and from school. full story
Two long-time South Colonie Board of Education members were honored by their peers Tuesday night for earning the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) Board Excellence Award. Under the Executive Budget Proposal outlined by Governor Andrew Cuomo on January 21, state funding for schools would increase by $1.1 billion next year – provided that state lawmakers go along with a series of education reforms that he described as “ambitious” in his combined budget address and State of the State message. full story

At its October meeting, the Board of Regents voted to authorize the State Education Department (SED) to finalize a plan that will allow New York’s students to choose from among multiple pathways to graduation, including a career and technical education (CTE) pathway. The plan is expected to receive final approval in January after a public comment period and will take effect for students graduating in June 2015. full story
A consortium of Capital Region BOCES, Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES and 17 school districts — including South Colonie — have won a $348,311 grant from the New York State Education Department to enhance and expand the expertise of area principals. full story
The New York State Education Department has given the go-ahead for a South Colonie solar energy project proposed a year ago. This is the final step for making the project a reality. South Colonie residents went to the polls on Tuesday, October 21, and overwhelmingly approved a $13.8 million capital project to upgrade district facilities and technology without adding to school property taxes. The project passed by a vote of 610-186 (77 percent). full story
The South Colonie Central School District has been ranked No. 11 in the Albany area in student performance in a report by Business First. According to the publication, the rankings reflect the collective performance of each district's public schools from kindergarten through 12th grade over a period of four years. full story
