South Colonie has conducted its random drawing of lottery spaces for students eligible for the 2015-16 Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) program. The lottery registration deadline was May 20 and the drawing was held on May 21. Everyone who participated in the lottery will receive notification letters sometime next week. South Colonie residents went to the polls today and approved a $96.3 million budget for the 2015-16 school year by a vote of 1,286-340. Unopposed incumbent candidate Brian Casey was re-elected to a new term on the Board of Education with 1,396 votes. full budget information

South Colonie Central Schools is participating the Teaching is the Core (TiTC) grant through a consortium of 12 districts, led by Capital Region BOCES and funded through a $399,946 grant from the New York State Education Department. The initiative aims to thoughtfully review and improve assessments in consortium districts to ensure they inform instruction and support learning goals. full story

The South Colonie Board of Education has approved a plan (pdf) for next September to change the starting and ending times of some of its schools. The change, the result of an ongoing transportation study, is expected to save on overall transportation costs by lowering the number of daily bus runs and provide more time between runs for drivers to transport students to and from school. full story

A consortium of Capital Region BOCES, Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES and 17 school districts — including South Colonie — have won a $348,311 grant from the New York State Education Department to enhance and expand the expertise of area principals. full story
The New York State Education Department has given the go-ahead for a South Colonie solar energy project proposed a year ago. This is the final step for making the project a reality. South Colonie residents went to the polls on Tuesday, October 21, and overwhelmingly approved a $13.8 million capital project to upgrade district facilities and technology without adding to school property taxes. The project passed by a vote of 610-186 (77 percent). full story
The South Colonie Central School District has been ranked No. 11 in the Albany area in student performance in a report by Business First. According to the publication, the rankings reflect the collective performance of each district's public schools from kindergarten through 12th grade over a period of four years. full story
