Forest Park celebrates successful Ramadan food drive

Forest Park Elementary School recently wrapped up its annual Ramadan Food Drive with an outpouring of generosity and support from students, staff, and families.

The school, known for its commitment to fostering empathy and compassion among its students, launched the food drive weeks ago to coincide with the start of Ramadan. Spearheaded by librarian Colleen Kuno, alongside Tracy Burns, the school’s resource officer, and in collaboration with Mr. Ayman Akari, coordinator of the Islamic Center of the Capital District, the initiative aimed to gather essential food items to aid families in need during the sacred month.

But the food drive wasn’t just about collecting donations—it was also an opportunity for students to learn about the significance of Ramadan and the importance of giving back to their community.  The culminating event took place during their morning program where the students gathered together to learn about Ramadan and see the fruits of their generosity lined up on display. 

“We brought in over 500 items,” said Kuno.  “One pre-K classroom alone brought in over 100 items. It was amazing to see everyone come together for this important cause. Our families were very generous.”

The food was boxed up and brought to the Islamic Center of the Capital District, by school bus immediately following the morning program.
